Tow trucks: State weight restrictions do not apply to tow trucks when towing a disabled vehicle, as long as the disabled vehicle meets state weight limits (Virginia Code § 46.2-1151). Tow trucks: Tow trucks42 if towing a disabled vehicle are exempt from height and weight requirements if they travel 50 miles or less.43 Exceptions for vehicle types: The following vehicles are exempt from state weight restrictions in Vermont: snowplows, road machinery, lubricants, traction motors, tractors, rollers, shovels, dump trucks, trucks or other construction or maintenance equipment when used by a 23, § 1399). STAA rules apply to the national motorway network. In principle, professional drivers are allowed to drive in all 50 federal states, which is why the federal government has uniform minimum requirements for width and length. There are exceptions to the law for agricultural and military, construction, police and fire vehicles The following table is a summary of semitrailer length laws by state: With respect to trucks operating on the NHS in Nevada, a provision in state law allows trucks to cross certain elements of federal borders: Nevada state law allows multiple axle and GMO exemptions for different types of vehicles and goods. It is a side-access semi-trailer with a drop-down chassis, designed and used for the transport and delivery of beverages in bottles or cans. The top coupling plate may extend beyond the front of the semi-trailer, but not beyond a semicircle with a radius from the hindawn to the front corner of the semi-trailer (Figure 10). The minimum and maximum length of the trailer is 8.53 m (28 feet) plus the length of the elongated top coupling plate. States may not specify an overall length for a tractor and beverage semi-trailer combination. If no semi-trailer is attached to tow hitch B, the combination is included in the length measurement of the first semi-trailer and the length of 14.63 m (48 feet) or grandfathered applies. Harvest permits: Vehicles for which harvest permits have been issued89 may have an authorized gross weight of 84,000 pounds or 4,000 pounds above what the vehicle can legally carry, depending on the number of axles and distance, no more than 84,000 pounds, on non-interstate highways. However, county and municipal government authorities may determine the routes on which such vehicles may operate within their respective jurisdictions.
An approved road designation made available to a specific permit holder is valid for 6 months from the date of issue. The harvesting permit provisions expire on July 1, 201390 (Ann. Miss. Code §63-5-33[5]). In the tables below, the number on the left is the maximum loading length, measured in feet or metres, from the front of the first loading unit to the rear of the last loading unit. This distance does not include exclusive devices without length approved by the Minister of Transport or by a State. The correct number is the maximum gross weight, in thousands of pounds or kilograms, that the vehicle type can carry when used as a LCV on the Interstate system. 40 That exemption does not exempt those lorries, whether loaded or unladen, from the State wheel weight limit of 800 pounds per inch of tyre width. When unladen, they must also comply with the usual axle load limits.
[ Return to footnote 40 referrer. ] States must allow carriers of “spiked” cars and boats – those whose fifth wheel is located on a drop frame placed below and behind the rear axle of the tractor – to have a total length of up to 75 feet (22.86 m). States must allow conventional car and boat carriers – those whose fifth wheel is located on the tractor chassis above the driving axle or driving axles – to have a total length of up to 65 feet (19.81 m). Automobile carriers are all combinations of vehicles specially designed and used for the transportation of assembled on-road vehicles, including truck RV units. RV units are portable units designed to provide temporary living spaces for leisure, travel or camping purposes, consisting of a roof, floor, and sides that can be loaded and unloaded in the back of a pickup truck. Tow trucks:139 Tow trucks or towing vehicles under emergency conditions are exempt from state weight restrictions, provided that the tow truck moves a disabled vehicle or combination of vehicles to the nearest safe zone for temporary parking or storage, no other alternatives are available, and the movement is for the safety of the traveling public (Utah Code Ann. §72-7-401[2] [f]). Fire Engines: Fire trucks may operate without a permit while in their residential fire district if axle weights and GVWR weights meet the following limits: 24,000 lbs on a single axle, 43,000 lbs. on a tandem axle and 67,000 lbs. In addition, the Department of Transport may issue permits authorising up to £50,000 on a tandem axle of a fire truck (Wash. Rev.
Code Ann. §46.44.190). Displacement of traction weight in axle groups: Between 1 October and 31 March, statutory axle masses for one, two and three groups of driving axles may be moved on traction vehicles travelling on Steese, Elliott, Dalton and Richardson highways between the North Pole and Prudhoe Bay or between the North Pole and MP 30 of the Steese Highway. The displaced weight of these groups of driving axles shall not exceed 2,000 lbs per axle. The legally permitted total weight of a vehicle or combination of vehicles shall not exceed the maximum weight. Reasonable access for food, fuel, or recreation up to 5 miles will also be granted, subject to local ordinances (Alaska Admin. Code. 17, §25.013 [d]). 164 For the purposes of this article, “indivisible load” means any load that exceeds the applicable length or weight limits and that, if divided into smaller loads or vehicles: (a) would compromise the use of the vehicle in accordance with its intended purpose to the extent that it would not be able to perform the function for which it was intended by separation; (b) destroy the value of the cargo or vehicle in so far as separation would render it unusable for its intended use; or (C) require more than 8 hours of work to be dismantled with appropriate equipment. Code §17C-17-11[b][2]) [ Return to footnote 164 referrer. Utility truck: State weight restrictions do not apply to damaged, disabled, or abandoned vehicles towed by a tow truck for a reasonable distance to the nearest safe port on the highway if the weight of each of these individual units does not exceed the maximum legal or permissible weight for the unit (N.H. Rev. Stat. Ann. §266:21-a). A truck is considered legal as long as the gross weight does not exceed the gross weight for which that vehicle is registered, does not exceed the legal load on track and does not exceed any of the weight restrictions listed below. (W.Va. Code §17C-17-9) Fire trucks: Fire trucks owned or operated by an organized firefighting company are exempt from government weight restrictions when driving on state or complementary highways (Del. Code Ann.
21, §4501 [h]) and on interstate highways and numbered highways in the United States (Del. Code Ann. tit. 21, §4503 [e]). Permits to transport loads near the Wisconsin-Michigan State Line: 171 Permits may be issued for vehicles operating in Michigan of length and weight within 11 miles of the state line. Permits may be issued for vehicles operated under these regulations that transport raw forest products, wood, or forest biomass on other roads in northern Wisconsin, as required by law.
