The only way to really know if you want and can work in investment banking is through a summer internship. Before my internship at UBS, I was interested in the “fast-moving” world of financial and investment banking, but I wasn`t sure what that meant. The spring weeks were a great overview, and it`s a starting point I highly recommend, but even these couldn`t really prepare me for the ups and downs that come with working in this industry. We want students who have a strong interest in UBS and our industry and are curious about how legal frameworks create opportunities, maintain stability and reputation. The ability to work in a rapidly changing environment while providing thoughtful solutions to problems is essential. UBS is a great place to work and we want people who see challenges as opportunities and who have the desire to develop and grow. Throughout the internship, I was so focused on understanding what was required of someone in investment banking that I forgot to fully explore what else was being offered. I`ve always been interested in investment banking, but an internship is the perfect time to see what skills other positions require and if you`re better suited for them. Talking to other interns and talking to UBS employees in all departments, I felt I had made the right choice. Still, I think I should have tried to find the time to accompany someone in the sales department or spend an afternoon in the research department to get an even better insight into how the company as a whole works.
No matter what industry you choose for your internship, the ideas, opportunities and presence we offer are second to none. We are looking for curious students, with a strong interest in the financial sector and who have studied at least four semesters at university before starting their internship. However, the support doesn`t stop once you join your team. Throughout your internship, you will have the opportunity to participate in other interactive and informative sessions to broaden your skills. These can range from lunch and learns with our leaders to networking opportunities with colleagues across UBS. All our sessions are designed to help you better understand and get to know UBS as an employer and support your next career step after your internship. You can only apply to one program in a country of your choice in the same academic year. For example, if you want to apply for the Graduate Talent program in global banking, you cannot apply for another program (graduate talent program or internship) or another field (e.g., global markets, operations) in the APAC region. On a daily basis, we deal with current and potential legal risks.
Being one step ahead makes us efficient. As my first internship, office job, and a real insight into the financial world, I learned a lot from the whole experience. Since I had no financial training (other than a few weeks of spring), the learning curve was very steep. I was amazed at how much the knowledge gap between me and other interns with finance and postgraduate degrees had narrowed – thanks to the ongoing training and support of analysts and team staff. But I also learned a lot about being in a work environment and doing office work. Constantly alert, attentive and flexible to ever-changing demands was a challenge in itself, so the job requires a lot of self-confidence and willingness to learn.
